Thriving Tweens:
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Middle Schoolers
-BECAUSE MIDDLE SCHOOL IS HARD-
Do you have a stressed-out tween (~11-14 years old)?
Are they finding it hard to manage all the new demands of middle school, family, activities, and friends?
Are they too hard on themselves? Do they seem overwhelmed or exhausted by all the things they are juggling? Are they always focusing on the negative?
Are you looking for healthy ways for your tween to learn to manage stress before they enter the teen years and high school?
STRESSED TWEENS may be a good fit for your child!
Dr. Maggie Bromberg offers a 4-session (90 minutes each session) small-group program aimed at teaching middle school aged tweens research-supported, creative ways to recognize stress and develop a mindful coping toolbox. All meetings will take place in-person, at CAPSS.
Participants will receive a copy of the “The Stress Reduction Workbook for Teens” by Gina Biegle, LMFT, and parents will receive a written skills overview. Learn more about the research-supported program (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Teens- MBSR-T) that Stressed Tweens is based upon.
Meetings will incorporate creative, experiential activities (e.g., crafts, music, and movement). Tweens will have the opportunity to learn from each other and connect over the shared experience of being a tween.
Topics include:
Stress is the problem, Mindfulness is a solution
Stress can hurt or help (Stress and the body, beginning a mindful practice)
Be here now (present awareness)
More of the good stuff, please (pleasant activities, noticing positive experiences)
I am not my thoughts (noticing thoughts, being and working with thoughts)
I can cope (positive coping strategies, healthy coping)
Thanks a lot (the benefits of gratitude)
Dr. Bromberg is a certified provider of MBSR-T, having completed direct training with Gina Biegle, and has extensive experience working with youth who would benefit from mindfulness based stress reduction. The transition to adolescence has always been a developmental period of transition and change. In other words, it is stressful! On top of the usual challenges, today’s tweens are growing up with the impact of living through a pandemic and are facing many uncertainties about the future. Thus, learning skills for recognizing stress and buffering the impact of stress can be especially impactful for tweens now and as they to grow up.
Prior to acceptance into the group program, each family will meet with Dr. Bromberg for an intake appointment to ensure that the group is a good fit for your child’s needs. If group is not deemed to be a good match, Dr. Bromberg will provide treatment recommendations and referrals.
Next round: Fridays 4:30-6pm in March 2024 (03/07, 03/15, 03/21, & 03/28)
Cost: $250 intake appointment & $800 for the group program
